Connection between Dynamically Derived Imf Normalisation and Stellar Population Parameters

چکیده
We report on empirical trends between the dynamically determined stellar initial mass function (IMF) and stellar population properties for a complete, volume-limited sample of 260 early-type galaxies from the ATLAS project. We study trends between our dynamically-derived IMF normalisation αdyn ≡ (M/L)stars/(M/L)Salp and absorption line strengths, and interpret these via single stellar population(SSP-) equivalent ages, abundance ratios (measured as [α/Fe]), and total metallicity, [Z/H]. We find that old and alphaenhanced galaxies tend to have on average heavier (Salpeter-like) mass normalisation of the IMF, but stellar population does not appear to be a good predictor of the IMF, with a large range of αdyn at a given population parameter. As a result, we find weak αdyn-[α/Fe] and αdyn−Age correlations and no significant αdyn−[Z/H] correlation. The observed trends appear significantly weaker than those reported in studies that measure the IMF normalisation via the low-mass star demographics inferred through stellar spectral analysis. The Geometry of Karbandi in Persian Architecture; Response to the Challenges of Conventional and Stellar Karbandi
Karbandi is one of the original and ancient arched elements in Persian architecture which is formed based on a network with harmonic geometry and in addition to architectural function, it also has structural behavior. However, there are ambiguities about the geometry of this architectural element that should be addressed with targeted research. One of these ambiguities is to determine how the g...
متن کاملIMF variations and their implications for Supernovae numbers
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per Gtype star) ...

Does the IMF vary? Is it significantly different in metal-rich environments than in metal-poor ones? Theoretical work predicts this to be the case. But in order to provide robust empirical evidence for this, the researcher must understand all possible biases affecting the derivation of the stellar mass function. Apart from the very difficult observational challenges, this turns out to be highly...
متن کاملSTELLAR MASSES OF LUMINOUS COMPACT BLUE GALAXIES AT REDSHIFTS z p 0.4–1.2
We present stellar mass measurements for a sample of 36 luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) at redshifts in the flanking fields around the Hubble Deep Field–North. The technique is based on fitting a twoz p 0.4–1.2 component galaxy population model to multi-broadband photometry. Best-fit models are found to be largely independent of the assumed values for the initial mass function (IMF) and ...
متن کاملOn the Mass of Dense Star Clusters in Starburst Galaxies from Spectro-Photometry
The mass of unresolved young star clusters derived from spectro-photometric data may well be off by a factor of 2 or more once the migration of massive stars driven by mass segregation is accounted for. We quantify this effect for a large set of cluster parameters, including variations in the stellar IMF, the intrinsic cluster mass, and mean mass density. Gas-dynamical models coupled with the C...
